Introduction:
The book entitled “The Best of Youngblood” is a
compilations of 77 different essays and articles from the daily news paper
named “Philippine Daily Inquirer”. Three of those essays I’ve read were entitled:
College and Beyond by Melinda Galledos Tan; No-Gay School Policy by Venir Turla
Cuyco; and, Books by Jaybee B. Arguillas.
The essay, College
and Beyond tells about the High school senior, dreaming what her future
would be after finishing high school. She imagined what course she is going to
take in which university. Being born with golden spoon, money is not a problem
to her. Some of her classmates, think to
continue or not to continue their studies, anyway, they have all the means to
live happily and bountifully because they belong to the well to do family. Their daily allowance is more than enough
from the basic salary of a daily wage earner. After those realizations, she thinks that she
is only one from a bunch of seniors waiting to graduate.
The Philippines which states that “ no person shall be deprived of life, liberty or property
essay No-Gay School Policy tells
about some school that denies admission to students “believed to be homosexuals”.
The author emphasize the Bill of Rights in the Constitution of the
without due process of law” and that no person shall “be denied the equal
protection of the law”. He said that
the provision does not distinguish
between males or females. It says that these
rights are to be enjoyed by everyone regardless of sex or sexual orientation.
The
essay entitled Books tells about the
boy that at his young age loved to read books. In second grade, started writing
a fairytale – like love stories. A book
lover at a very young age is seldom seen today.
Body:
I
like the book, “The Best of Youngblood” because it is very inspiring and
awakening. The three articles I have
read are all about interests, attitudes and experiences of the authors.
The College and Beyond is what I like most among the
three articles I have read. I can relate on the essay because even I am a High
school Sophomore, I am also wondering how those people survive with a budget of
less than half of my daily allowance. I remember the time when we live near the
squatter’s area in Sampaloc that almost people only have a salary equivalent to
my two days allowance. It is true that, most well to do family extended help
only during Christmas or an outreach program.
On the essay No-Gay School Policy is also a good story. It shows sexual discrimination among students in
the college level. While God created male and female in this
world, homosexual appears because of some abnormalities, but still they are
classified as male or female. Discriminating homosexual is unjust because we
have a constitution that states our rights as citizens of the Philippines.
“That no person shall be denied the equal protection of the laws”. The
provision does not distinguish between male or female or homosexual or
heterosexual. It says these rights are to be enjoyed by everyone regardless of
sex or sexual orientation. Denying the person admission to an academic
institution because of his or her sexual orientation is a deprivation of
liberty without due process and a denial of the equal protection of the laws.
The essay entitled Books, is very
inspiring to young readers because if your hobby is to reading different kind
of books, it widened your knowledge about different kind of subjects, you reach
different places and discover new knowledge and updated with current events. On
the other hand, it has a disadvantage like in the case of the author himself,
he doesn’t listen to the lecture of the
teacher instead he is reading a fairytale book or novel. I think it is not good
example for young readers because it can be the cause of failure in some subjects
and learn some exploitive words from the novels, stories and articles.
Conclusion:
I therefore conclude that the contents
of the book are good and that it is inspiring, awakening and a good source of
new ideas. A true to life experiences
that some reader can relate with the author.
Recommendations:
I
strongly recommend that this book will be prescribed continuously as a reading
material / reference for high school students. I also recommend that this book will be read by my friends, classmates,
students in high school and even with my relatives at home instead of reading
“comics” and funny magazines.
